Decades ago Pokemon may have ruled the schoolyard roost as the king of pocket monsters, but it was far from the only one. Just because something is popular, doesn’t always mean it’s the best, it usually just means it has the best marketing.
Monster Expedition is a game about capturing rare and majestic monsters for study rather than battle. You accomplish this by rolling an ever-increasing, but always satisfying number of dice.
SHŌBU was a strange experience for me. I prefer heavier games, and SHŌBU is about as far from heavy as you can get. The rules can be summed up with a single page. Chess is a fairly good comparison, except SHŌBU is even simpler than chess as there is only one type of “game piece” so to speak.
