Upcoming Games to Watch in Early 2019

2019 looks to be a pretty big year for both indie and mainstream gaming. I’ve compiled a list of games I think should have your attention in the first quarter of 2019, they certainly have mine.

These games are either confirmed or suspected to release early this year. However, some of them do not have tentative release dates and I may be off base with them. In any case, they are worth keeping an eye on. I’ll be attempting to review many of these titles.

Kofi Quest Alpha Mod

Kofi Quest alpha mod is a game based on a web series. I think its real-time strategy gameplay combined with RPG, adventure staples. It looks intriguing. You play as Kofi, a lazy RPG character. Its visuals look crisp and it seems like its going to be a humorous outing.

  • Release Date: Early 2019

The Last Friend

The last friend is what you get if you crossbreed plants vs zombies and side-scrolling beat em up. Its a tower defense game and beat em up. You protect dogs from those who would harm them in a post-apocalyptic setting. It’s a neat concept and will probably easily appeal to dog lovers like myself.

  • Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Humble store, Itch.io and Gamejolt
  • Release Date: Early 2019

Kingdom Hearts 3

kingdom hearts 3

I started with the kingdom hearts franchise when I was around 14 or 15 years old. Now I’m 30 and kingdom hearts 3 has been a long time coming. I’m concerned it won’t hold the same magic that it did when I was younger. But I’m still excited to finally play it. And to see if I can finish piecing together the infamously convoluted story.

  • Platforms: PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
  • Release Date: January 25th

Unruly Heroes

unrulyheroes_tt02_022018 (1)

Inspired by A Journey To The West, Unruly heroes is a platformer with a seriously gorgeous aesthetic. It can be played in co-op with up to 4 players and features PVP. Players can expect four playable heroes, puzzles, boss fights and the ability to possess enemies. I’m not normally a big fan of platformers, but this one really caught my eye a while back, and I’ve been eagerly waiting on it since.

  • Platforms: Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Steam
  • Release Date: Early 2019

Jon Shafer’s At The Gates

1 - early game

I’m a huge fan of Civilization and 4X games in general. At The Gates looks to take the formula in a new direction with survival elements and factions that aren’t on level ground with you. The watercolor visual style is also pleasant to look at it. I love the asymmetrical concept.

  • Platforms: Steam.
  • Release Date: January 23rd.

Evolution is a digital adaptation of the board game sharing the same name. The board game itself is a ton of fun, so I’m excited about the digital version as well. The game itself has 1 to 4 players attempting to evolve creatures and eat the most food. This is done by using trait cards. It’s very strategical and the digital version looks promising with AI matches and online multiplayer.

  • Platforms: Steam, Android and iOS
  • Release Date: February 12th

Genesis Alpha One

I’ve been watching Genesis Alpha One for quite a while and was pretty disappointed when it was delayed. It looks to be a highly unique survival game. You build your own space station and play it from the first person perspective. Crew member death is permanent and the universe is randomly generated. I love survival games and this one looks right up my alley.

  • Platforms: Playstation 4, Xbox One, Epic games store.
  • Release Date: January 29th

I know a lot of people are skeptical of Anthem for any number of reasons. Even I have my concerns. But I have to be honest here. I really want an Iron man game in the same vein as Insomniacs SpiderMan. And unless Marvel gives me one, Anthem is the closest alternative. So I’m hoping it turns out to be a really solid title for that reason. If it turns out not to be, you can bet your bottom that I’ll let you know in my review.

Games coming out of Early Access.

The following games are technically already out but are completing their early access runs soon.

My Time at Portia

In the vein of Harvest Moon. My time at Portia has you farming and running a workshop. But it also features skills and a combat system. I’ve always enjoyed harvest moon and more recently Stardew valley. So I’m always on the lookout for quality titles in the same genre.

  • Platforms: Steam (PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch to come)
  • Release Date: Out of early Access January 15th. Console release early 2019

Slay the Spire

slay the spire

Slay the spire is a roguelike with turn and card-based battle system. You ascend a spire picking your next location in a way that’s similar to FTL. Its visuals are pleasant and the gameplay looks to be very in-depth and strategical. I’m a sucker for card games, so it has my attention. It also recently introduced Steam workshop integration. So talented modders are adding new goodies to it as we speak.

  • Platforms: Steam
  • Release Date: It comes out of early access January 23rd

Astroneer is a planetary exploration, adventure and crafting game that features malleable terrain and co-op. You have to collect resources and keep your oxygen up on a series of planets.  Its got some neat ideas and you can craft vehicles to move around in and transport resources. I played it when it was still very early and it was fun then. I can’t wait to see everything that’s been added.

  • Website: Astroneer
  • Platforms: Steam, Xbox One and Microsoft store
  • Release Date: Leaving early access February 6th

The Wild 8

the wild 8

The Wild 8 is another survival game, this one plays with a top-down perspective and also features co-op. Scavenge, hunt for food and work together to survive a randomly generated world. It also has some supernatural elements. I’ve been watching this one for a long time, but never pulled the trigger on it. Since its coming out of early access I will be though! I really like its emphasis on working together in co-op.

  • Website: The Wild 8
  • Platforms: Steam
  • Release date: Coming out of early access in March

This isn’t every game I’m interested in of course. And some games always slip through the cracks. If you have your eyes on any games coming out between now and April, and it’s not on this list. Let me know in the comments below, tweet at me on Twitter or find me in Discord
